You may want to change university, take academic leave, or stop studying. For a local student, this is mainly an academic decision. For an international student, it may also affect the legal basis for living in Azerbaijan.
Full-time study is one of the grounds for temporary residence. If your degree, study mode, or enrolment status changes, do not assume that the existing residence card continues unchanged.
Transferring to another university
Get written answers from both universities before submitting the final transfer request. The current university should confirm the date your status ends. The new university should confirm the admission date and the document it will issue as proof of full-time study.
Check whether there is a gap between those dates. An academically approved transfer may still require an immigration update. Ask the State Migration Service whether you need a new permit application, a document from the receiving university, or a change to your address registration.
Do not hand over original documents until you know when and how they will be returned. Request an academic transcript, grade record, copy of the transfer order, and proof of cleared financial obligations when required.
Academic leave
Academic leave does not always mean that active full-time status continues for immigration purposes. The reason, duration, and university rules all matter.
Before taking leave, ask whether your enrolment and full-time mode remain active, which status the university reports to government systems, whether your residence basis continues, whether you may remain in Azerbaijan, and what is required when you return to classes.
A medical certificate or internal university order does not answer the immigration question by itself. Obtain a separate written explanation.
Dismissal or withdrawal
Once you are no longer enrolled, the full-time study basis ends. Do not treat the expiry date printed on the residence card as guaranteed time. Confirm the effective date, collect your academic documents, and contact the Migration Service immediately.
Your next step may be departure, new enrolment, another lawful residence basis, or employer-sponsored documentation. Act before your stay becomes unlawful.
Changing the study mode or language
A move away from full-time study needs particular attention because the official residence ground is linked to full-time education. A language change is usually academic, but it may involve a new degree and contract. Check both issues separately.
Documents worth keeping
- the official transfer, leave, withdrawal, or dismissal order;
- confirmation of current status and study mode;
- academic transcript and results;
- contract and payment records;
- copies of your passport, address registration, and residence card;
- correspondence with the international office and Migration Service;
- proof of the new address if you move.
A safer order of action
- Confirm the exact date of the status change.
- Obtain the official document from the current university.
- For a transfer, obtain proof of the new admission.
- Check immigration consequences before signing the final request.
- Review your address registration and remaining lawful stay.
- Keep copies of everything submitted and received.
